5 WAYS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR!

Back-to-school likely means back to a busier schedule for you and your family. But with a little decluttering and some smart organizing hacks, you can make this school year the best one yet. Here’s everything you need for back-to-school organizing to get your house in shape for the new school year.

ORGANIZE CLOSET SPACE IN KID’S BEDROOM

A clutter-free kid’s bedroom may be too much to ask for. However, an organized closet is very doable… and exciting if they get involved in the process. You can make it a family event! They can help decide what stays in the space and what goes in the donation bin. Everyone can fold shirts, sweaters, night clothes, socks, and other clothing items. Jackets, hats and scarves can hang on hooks on the back of doors. Remember to label or tag storage bins and other containers on the shelves for easy identification. Some real family bonding! Once this is done, it will make your school “morning routine” a little easier!

SET UP A CALENDAR

Everyone has a calendar on their phone now a days but for this it’s best to go old school! Get a pretty calendar to hang on the wall to mark important school dates. Be sure to hang it in a common space and fill it with deadlines, test dates and field trips. That way no test or quiz can sneak up on the kids and they have time to study and prepare.

CREATE STUDY SPACES

There are several ways of creating study/work areas for your children. For families who have limited space, the dining table becomes a “homework zone” between the time the kids get home from school and dinner time. Children do their homework in a relaxed atmosphere and get feedback from their parents and each other. Be sure to make this space slightly different from the rest of the house so when the kids sit down and work, they know they are in a studying environment not their bedroom or somewhere they can get easily distracted.

CLEAR THE MUDROOM

Clear out the mudroom to make space for everyday school supplies like backpacks, books, shoes, rain jackets ect. Try to make sure every item has a “home” so when you and the kids are rushing around in the morning trying to catch the bus you know where everything is! The same rules apply even if you don’t have a mudroom! Install hangers and cubbies/ cabinets to the entry way to allow access to everything quickly and easily!
